Gilda, a Canadian artist, was born in Mexico. She has obtained 24 prizes for her work in oil, acrylics, and mixed media and 10 more prizes for photography and digital art.
Gilda was recognized by Forbes Magazine in 2018 as one of the Most Powerful Women in Mexico for her project “Let’s Paint Hope”, which she founded 10 years ago to teach art to indigenous children in Mexico. She was also recognized by the governments of Mexico and Canada for her voluntary work and her artistic excellence.
Gilda’s work is found in public, corporate and private collections in Canada, Mexico, U.S.A., Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, The Netherlands, France, Spain, New Zealand, Argentina, etc.
She has donated more than 75 pieces of art and has helped organizing fund-raising events to help people and organizations such as the Ottawa General Hospital, OCCISO (a non-profit organization that help immigrants in Canada), Doctors without Borders, The Leukemia Study Group, Starlight Children’s Foundation, Bruyère Hospital, The Women’s Action Centre Against Violence, ’PBS’’ (Public Broadcasting Service), The Children’s Aid Foundation, etc., etc.
Over the years she raised funds to help countries such as Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, etc. after they suffered natural disasters.
In 2001 she was selected by the Department of External Affairs and one of her paintings and profile appeared in the Canada World View Magazine to commemorate the Summit of the Americas celebrated in Québec City.
Her work has been published in books, magazines, and newspapers all around the world.
Artist Statement:
My art is a constant search, which encompass a spiritual dimension. Images travel between the mundane and a magical world, without making the illusion of reality its main objective.
By portraying the richness of pre-Columbian cultures in my paintings, I invite people to get immersed into their wisdom, symbolism, traditions, and knowledge.
By understanding where we came from is the only way to move forward and create a better world.
