Aymara Alvarado Sanchez

After studying drawing, painting, and sculpture at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City, Aymara Alvarado Sanchez followed the footsteps of her grandfather Carlos Alvarado Lang who was a respected engraver. Her admiration for classical painters led her to experiment with traditional technics (oil on canvas and gold leaf). Her current approach drives her to combine old and new methods, hoping to abolish their boundaries, and delving into cultural and environmental differences.

 

Since 2005 Aymara has been exploring the world of performances and movies. With an Avant-Garde style, Aymara aims to break the dogmas of society while exploring her own vulnerability. In her own words: "I want to be naked in my soul before the audience". The impact of her strong emotions rises the spectator outside their comfort zone, inducing a cathartic process in the viewer. 

 

In 2011, she received a grant from CALQ (Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec) that allowed her to continue her research and work as a professional artist. 

 

In 2012, Aymara learned how to play the saxophone and sing. Since then, she has been producing music. Digging into the process of improvisation, she mixes ancestral shamanic songs with electronic, jazz, and experimental music, creating a mysterious and sensual atmosphere. Flowing with freedom, and avoiding repetition, Aymara intends to metamorphose herself into a medicine woman. Her performances are grounded in the principles of respect for life, consciousness, and truth in art.
