Charlene Raven Tolley
Multidisciplinary artist
Charlene Raven Tolley is an Algonquin artist from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation and the owner of Raven’s Nest Arts and Crafts. With approximately 30 years of experience, Charlene is an accomplished beadwork artist, traditional hand-drum maker, self-published author, and workshop facilitator whose practice is deeply rooted in culture, family, and community.
Beading has been passed down through four generations of women in Charlene’s family and is much more than an artistic practice for her. It is a source of healing, meditation, and connection to her ancestors. As Charlene shares, “Every bead you pick up is an ancestor that has your back.” She continues this tradition through her own work and by sharing her knowledge with others through workshops in beading, medicine pouch making, hand-drum making, and dreamcatcher making.
Charlene is also known for creating traditional and illuminated dreamcatchers, including impressive 12-foot lighted dreamcatcher installations. Over the years, she has travelled the Pow Wow trail selling her artwork, crafts, beads, and supplies and participating in cultural and community gatherings. She has also self-published books related to beadwork, floral designs, and traditional artistic practices.
Through Raven’s Nest Arts and Crafts, Charlene continues to celebrate and share Algonquin artistry while carrying forward traditions that connect generations, culture, creativity, and community.
