Stephanie Hill

I grew up in Cornwall Ontario Canada and spent my summers at our cottage on the Saint Lawrence River surrounded by my parents, two brothers, an array of cousins, uncles, aunts, friends, dogs, and miles of life filled wetlands. I suppose it’s no coincidence that much of my work focuses on family and relationships, both with others and with the natural world. I graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in Toronto, and was privileged to partake in the college’s off-campus program in Florence, Italy. Since graduating with a four-year Associate diploma in Fine Art, I have devoted my life to my artistic practice which has encompassed painting, drawing and printmaking. Being awarded an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant enabled me to live in Italy and continue my European art studies.

I currently live in Wakefield Quebec Canada, on the Gatineau River downstream from my art studio. Since moving here 13 years ago I have been active in several community art projects, leading workshops, and creating permanent public art installations. Eleven years ago, I became a founding member of Place des Artistes de Farrellton, a not-for-profit rural artists' coop and have been active on their board since that time. My work features in several private collections nationally and abroad, and I have participated in a wide range of group and solo shows.

My work is highly intuitive and, along with early Renaissance art, I count comic books, ink illustrations by John Teniel and Edward Gorey, Marc Chagall's paintings and etchings, Bugs Bunny, and Mad Magazine as influences on my work. Adding to this list are 100-plus-year-old dress catalog engravings and, most recently, 16th-century botanical illustrations by Maria Sibylla Merian.

My work uses symbols and mythologies to reveal a powerful and rich story. Painting is an emotional and intuitive experience for me and I often portray water, trees, gardens, flowers, animals, and insects to create a world where dreams, unconscious desires, and the divine come into play. I've honed my composition skills with oil on stretched linen, yet also create drawing on paper with watercolours, gouache, and pen and ink. I see my art as a deep expression of aliveness and transformation. I hope to bring those who encounter my work on a compelling and delightful journey of self-discovery that reveals the ever-changing dance between the world around us and the one within.
