Kezi

I am kezi, a singer/songwriter from Burundi, who's lived in Canada for 6 years. I am the daughter of a great traditional musician, from whom I learned everything I know. According to my father, I could sing before I could speak. I started dancing at 6 years old, learning the piano at 9, playing the guitar at 13 and writing my own songs in 2020. Since then, I’ve done shows in Kigali and Ottawa. Through open mic nights in Ottawa, I’ve connected with other local musicians, and started to develop a deep connection to my community -- something I hadn't experienced since I left home in 2012. Art, much like love, is universally familiar. For many of us who live far away from all we once knew, home is where art is.

I make art to connect with my own soul and with the collective human spirit. To me, art is both an identity and a refuge.
