Maya Hum
Visual Artist
Maya Hum is a visual artist and arts educator based in Ottawa, Canada. Her passion for art and design has allowed her work to be featured in publications, campaigns, and exhibitions across Canada. You can also find her art adorning several public murals throughout the vibrant city of Ottawa and scenic Gatineau Hills, Quebec.
Originally from the Maritimes, Maya Hum moved to Ottawa to pursue her undergraduate studies in Music and Sonic Design. During her final year, she found herself incorporating visual elements into her work, igniting an interest in the world of visual art. She continued her studies at the Ottawa School of Art, receiving the Robert Hyndman Painting & Drawing Scholarship. Within two years, Maya proudly secured her first Artist Residency and solo exhibit in the city of Toronto. She then went on to complete her graduate studies in Professional Illustration.
Her art practice is shaped by untold or often overlooked narratives that surface through lived experience, quiet conversations, and small moments we often miss in our daily lives. Maya is especially drawn to how these moments tell stories of the interconnected well-being of ourselves, others, and the environment, and how nurturing one supports the whole.
Maya finds great joy in creating nature-based settings that strike a delicate balance between reality and imagination, inviting viewers into a whimsical world.
